Day 412

How to make water safe to drink

Tap quit on you, or the water looks wrong after a flood? Do it in this order:

  1. If it's cloudy, filter it first. Run it through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter. Or let it settle and use only the clear water on top.
  2. Boil it. Bring it to a rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft). Let it cool covered.
  3. Can't boil? Use unscented bleach (5–9% sodium hypochlorite): 8 drops per gallon (2 drops per liter). Stir and wait 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy or very cold, double it.
  4. Store it in clean containers with tight lids.

Water that smells like fuel or chemicals is not made safe by boiling or bleach. Don't drink it: use bottled water and follow local officials.
